What Is My Private IP Address? How to Find Your Local IP

By Rohit, founder of XiaTools · Updated 14 Oct 2026

Your private IP address, also called your local IP, is the address your router gives your device inside your home or office network. It almost always starts with 192.168., 10. or a number between 172.16. and 172.31.. It is not the address websites see. That one is your public IP, which you can check with our What Is My IP tool.

Private IP vs Public IP

Private IP Public IP
Who gives it Your router (DHCP) Your internet provider
Seen by websites No Yes
Unique worldwide No, the same ranges are reused in every home Yes, or shared by many users through CGNAT
Example 192.168.1.23 49.36.120.15

Private IP Address Ranges

These ranges are reserved for private networks by RFC 1918 and are never used on the public internet:

Block Range Common use
10.0.0.0/8 10.0.0.0 to 10.255.255.255 Offices, some home routers
172.16.0.0/12 172.16.0.0 to 172.31.255.255 Offices, Docker networks
192.168.0.0/16 192.168.0.0 to 192.168.255.255 Most home routers

Two other ranges are worth knowing. An address starting with 169.254. means your device did not get an IP from the router, so check the Wi-Fi or cable. An address from 100.64.0.0 to 100.127.255.255 is CGNAT space used by internet providers. Use our Subnet Calculator to see the full range of any block.

How to Find Your Private IP on Linux

How to Find Your Private IP on Android

How to Find Your Private IP on iPhone and iPad

Open Settings > Wi-Fi and tap the i icon next to your connected network. The IP address is listed under IPv4 Address.

Why Websites Cannot Show Your Private IP

Modern browsers such as Chrome, Firefox and Safari hide your local IP from websites to protect your privacy, and replace it with a random name ending in .local. That is why online tools that promise to show your private IP usually fail. The steps above, done on your own device, are the reliable way.

See Every Device on Your Network

Open your router admin page in a browser, usually 192.168.1.1 or 192.168.0.1, and look for a list called DHCP clients or Connected devices. It shows the private IP of every phone, laptop and smart device on your network.

Frequently asked questions

Is 192.168.1.1 my private IP address?

Usually not. 192.168.1.1 is normally your router, also called the default gateway. Your own device gets a different address in the same range, for example 192.168.1.23.

Can my private IP address change?

Yes. Your router hands out private IPs with DHCP and may give a different one after a restart. To keep it fixed, set a DHCP reservation in your router settings.

Is it safe to share my private IP address?

Mostly yes. A private IP only works inside your own network and millions of homes use the same addresses, so it cannot be used to reach you from the internet.

What is the difference between my private IP and public IP?

Your private IP identifies your device inside your home network. Your public IP identifies your whole network on the internet and is the address websites see.
